Answers:

The Help "Wizard" does not come up. I get an error message when I click on Help.
If you did not complete all of the above steps in sequence, there may be errors when the program comes up because one or the other components for the Wizard has not been properly loaded on your machine. In that case, run these programs in sequence:
1. MSAGENT.EXE (Microsoft Help Agent Technology)
2. TV_ENUA.EXE (Text-to-Voice Speech Engine)
3. SPCHAPI.EXE (Speech library)

How do I create an Icon for the application on the desktop?
If you have installed the application ON YOUR LOCAL COMPUTER, follow these steps:

a) Click on Start, Programs, TPS2000 and then use the cursor to move it to show the TPS2000 program. See screenshot.
b) Then click WITH THE RIGHT MOUSE Button on the TPS2000 program and select Send to, Desktop as Shortcut. See screenshot.

I get a message "bad path" and the program won't start
What happens here is that you have an entry in your computer's C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT file with a bad PATH statement.

For example the path
PATH=C:\WINDOWS;C:W\INDOWS\COMMAND:C:\EON;
has TWO problems:
1. There should be a semicolon instead of a colon between C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND and C:\EON.
2. The END of the PATH statement should not have a semicolon.

TPS2000 does not need any PATH statement at all. However, if there are wrong entries in the PATH, it will follow them.

Remove any invalid entries from the PATH statement and TPS2000 will start up.

Where are the most up-to-date installation instructions?
See this document downloads.htm.

I get an error message with "DCOM" or "ODBC" in it
Some older Windows 95 Computers don't have an up-to-date version of software to access data. If you get error messages with the words DCOM or ODBC, load the DCOM95.EXE software into your computer. Warning: THIS IS ONLY FOR WINDOWS 95, not for 98 or NT.. If you don't get any such error messages, you don't need this component in your computer.

If you still keep getting DCOM or ODBC error messages during installation or setup, you can safeyly ignore them and proceed with the installation anyway. TPS2000 does not need the DCOM or ODBC software. That software is only required if you want to mail-merge TPS2000 reports with Microsoft Word.

How can I print the manual (or sections of it)
Click on the small "Printer" icon in the TPS2000 program to bring up the Reports Menu. Select the Report TPS2000 USER GUIDE. Then Click the Run button. Select what sections of the manual you want to print on the following screen and click on Printer to print the manual.

ACMSETUP or KERNEL32.DLL Errors
These are rarely occurring errors that will only show up on PCs with unreliable hardware or Windows configuration. The problem is caused by these computers and will also occur on installing certain other Software Products, such as Microsoft Office etc.

If you don't fully understand these instructions, have your hardware technician or a technical person perform the fix. Do not attempt to perform this fix yourself, if you don't understand the following information.

SYMPTOMS
When installing TPS2000 from the CD-ROM, you may receive the following error message:
This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.
If you click Details, you receive an error message similar to the following:
ACMSETUP caused an invalid page fault in module KERNEL32.DLL at 0177:bff7be97.

CAUSE
This problem may occur when the following conditions are true:
You are using Microsoft Windows 98 or 95.
-and-
You have your CD-ROM drive configured to use Direct Memory Access (DMA) in the Windows 98 Device Manager.

WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, follow these steps.

Disable DMA for the CD-ROM

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the System icon, and then click the Device Manager tab.
  3. Select View Devices By Type and click the plus sign to the left of CDROM.
  4. Click the CD-ROM drive you want to change, and then click Properties.
  5. In the CD-ROM Drive Properties dialog box, click the Settings tab.
  6. In Settings, clear the DMA check box. Click OK.

Close the System Properties window, restart the computer, and then try installing one of the products listed at the beginning of this article to ensure that the error does not appear.

If this does not solve your problem, you may need to use the following additional steps.

Disable DMA for the Disk drive(s)

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the System icon, and then click the Device Manager tab.
  3. Select View Devices By Type and click the plus sign to the left of Disk drives.
  4. Click the disk drive you want to change, and then click Properties.
  5. In the Disk Drive Properties dialog box, click the Settings tab.
  6. In Settings, clear the DMA check box. Click OK.
  7. Repeat steps 4 through 6 for each disk drive.

Delete Product Folder and Reinstall

  1. Delete the TPS2000 folder created during the installation.
  2. Restart Windows 98. On the Windows Start menu, click Shutdown. Select Restart, and click OK.
  3. Install TPS2000 again.

After the installation is complete, repeat the appropriate steps in the sections above to re-enable DMA.

There is no On-Line Documentation or my Setup Wizard Screen is empty.
At some point during the installation from the CD your system missed to load the full EONHELP database file. This occurs mostly because people install their CD, and then update from the Web to the latest version before ever running the program version that comes off the CD.

To correct the problem, you can load the file EONHELP.EXE off our web site and run it. Your computer will start a dialog for the setup process. When the system asks you for a destination directory, specify C:\TPSTRAIN, if you are missing the help information in the Training Version or C:\TPS2000 if you are missing the file in the production version.

A device attached to the system is not functioning
I get an error message citing a problem linking to a system resource. The first message lists a missing link to "COMCTL32.DLLInitCommon Controls Ex". The second message states that "A device attached to the system is not functioning". What does this mean? And how can I correct the problem?

The program is trying to access a version of a Windows 95 system file that is newer than the one on your computer. Many programs created today require the newer version of this file. This problem occurs most often for people who have Netscape Navigator 3.x.

Microsoft has supplied a small program that will install the newer version of this file. Please download this file: 40comupd.exe. The file size is about 500KB and should not take too long to download. Once you have downloaded the self-extracting program you will have to double-click on the program to install the new file. After you have installed it, you will have to re-start your computer

When I print a report, it comes up with a dialog for a missing BMP file.
This error occurs when the file REPTLOGO.BMP is missing on your system. You can download this file by right-clicking on this link: REPTLOGO.BMP and then select "Save Target As" and specify your C:\TPS2000 directory as target.

If you cannot download files from the Internet, you can just use the Microsoft Paint Program and create an empty, white small graphics file (if you want, you can use your own company logo) and save that file as REPTLOGO.BMP. The file has to be in BMP format however.

Optimizing Performance of Windows NT Server and Windows 2000 Server
IBM just published the 2nd edition of their Windows NT and W2K Performance book. This is an excellent reference book, which can be applied to all Windows NT Servers, not only the ones manufactures by IBM. A complete 6.8MB PDF of the entire 600-page book is freely downloadable from the IBM Web site (URL below). You can also buy it online as a regular book, (list $49.99) via Amazon or other booksellers.

It's been updated to include the latest info on tuning Windows 2000, tuning IBM Netfinity hardware and tuning some of the major NT/2000 server applications.

This is an excellent reference book from IBM, and this is worth giving your address info and email address to them. (You have to register to get access to it). Check out: http://www.redbooks.ibm.com ISBN: 0-13-040612-0

MSCAL.OCX was unable to register itself in the system registry.
CAUSE
Mscal.ocx does not register under certain circumstances with version 5.0 of Comcat.dll.

RESOLUTION
Use the following steps to replace Comcat.dll version 5.0 with version 4.71.1460.1. Replace C:\ with the Windows NT installation drive if Windows NT is installed to a different drive on your computer.

From the Start button, click Run. Type cmd and click OK.
Rename the file C:\WINNT\System32\Comcat.dll to Comcat.123
Copy the file Comcat.dll (ver. 4.71.1460.1) to the Windows System folder on your machine. Comcat.dll is located in the folder VB98\Wizards\PDWizard\Redist\ on Disk 1 of the Visual Studio/Visual Basic 6.0 CD.
From the Start menu, click Run. Type REGSVR32 COMCAT.DLL and click OK.
Restart the computer.
Reinstall TPS2000
