EHR/EMR

Achieving Stage 1, Meaningful Use

Dr. Perry Cammisa, D.C., an EON Systems’ client since 1998, just received his first EHR incentive Woodridge Chiropractor, Perry Cammisa D.C. payment of $18,000 after attesting to achieving the requirements of “Meaningful Use Stage 1.”

Dr Cammisa is the President/Co-Founder of B-Strong4Life, the owner of Ultimate ChiroCare, National Medical Advisor to Power Plate North America, a certified Biomechanics Specialist and an Acceleration Training expert. Here is an interview with Dr. Cammisa by EON's Newsbit correspondent.

Newsbit: Dr. Cammisa, please tell us about your clinic.

Dr. Cammisa: Ultimate ChiroCare™, established in 1991, has incorporated cutting edge technology into our practice so patients receive the correct pain free treatment for their condition.

Our new location also serves as a Worldwide Chiropractic Physician Training Center and corporate headquarters for BStrong4Life. The BStrong4Life™ System has the ability to reverse the aging and deterioration of your structure by strengthening the entire musculoskeletal system. We use a proprietary protocol that is designed to improve one’s bone density, muscle strength, balance, coordination, and stability.

We are also currently conducting a Medication-Free Bone Density Study, which was approved by Edward Hospital IRB (Institutional Review Board).

You can visit my websites at: www.UltimateChiroCare.com and www.BStrong4Life.com.

Newsbit: What made you decide to go for a certified EHR system?

Dr. Cammisa: Knowing that our clinic would qualify based on the parameters outlined, the decision to move forward was made. I knew there would be some work ahead of us to complete by the end of the year, but the cash reward at the end was well worth the effort.

Newsbit: What extra work was involved in implementing the system?

Dr. Cammisa: One of the Meaningful Use Measures is: “Conduct or review a security risk analysis per 45 CFR* 164.308 (a)(1) and implement security updates as necessary and correct identified security deficiencies as part of its risk management process”.

*CFR stands for Code of Federal Regulationshttp://www.hitechanswers.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/HIPAAObjective.jpg

EP stands for Eligible Provider, a provider that fits the criteria to receive stimulus payments.

EH stands for Eligible Hospitals

CAH stands for Critical Access Hospital

Besides the obvious, tracking each unique patient with all the data points, the security risk analysis definitely showed where the clinic was vulnerable. We had just recently moved into a new office, and every detail was planned out. Securing the server room and all communications had to be both functional and complement the look of the office. We had a customized security rolling screen built in that works perfectly. It was expensive, but works fantastic and looks really cool.

Newsbit: What advice would you give to others that would help them avoid some of the pitfalls you hit?

Dr. Cammisa: Getting the entire team on board prior to starting would be the biggest victory. Frustration can always occur when you work with computers, and this was no different. It meant more work initially, but now it's integrated into our daily routines.

Newsbit: What are the advantages of having an EHR system?

Dr. Cammisa:The biggest advantage is that we have already had requests from insurance providers requiring EHR certification for continued payment.

Newsbit: What features in The Digital Office make it easier for you to get more done as a chiropractor?

Dr. Cammisa: The best feature (Recreate Note) is that you can recreate a patient visit in seconds.

Newsbit: What are the benefits to your practice from using The Digital Office?

Dr. Cammisa: Once you have customized the system for your style of practice, note time is dramatically reduced, and everything from billing to x-rays can be documented.

Newsbit:Is there anything else you would like to say?

Dr. Cammisa: Now that the up-front work has been done, it has been very easy to stay on top of the EHR system, and the next cash bonus will seem like icing on the cake.

Newsbit: Many thanks to you, Dr. Cammisa, for sharing your experience with EHR.
